2015 Housing Visionary Award Honorees

This year NHC honors two comprehensive community development initiatives with affordable housing at the center of success.

The Community Properties Initiative
led by Ohio Capital Corporation for Housing

The Community Properties Initiative is a comprehensive and sustained community development effort led by the Ohio Capital Corporation for Housing (OCCH) in partnership with The Ohio State University (OSU), the City of Columbus, the Ohio Housing Finance Agency and the philanthropic and corporate community of Central Ohio. The initiative began in 2003 and focuses on the residential neighborhoods adjacent to OSU.

NHC and the housing community honor the Community Properties Initiative with the 2015 Housing Visionary Award for its work to redevelop seven inner-city Columbus neighborhoods. Through a phased LIHTC renovation program involving over $100 million in public-private investments spread across the seven neighborhoods, OCCH lead significant redevelopment of affordable rental units, new construction of both market rate and affordable homes and effective community services to increase neighborhood cohesion.

We are pleased to recognize the initiative's efforts to improve the quality of life for residents in these neighborhoods. This initiative has provided increased access to decent, affordable housing, innovative and sustained social services for low-income residents and successful safety programs to reduce crime in the communities. This approach to neighborhood redevelopment is a true inspiration for the housing community.

Piece by Piece Underwater Neighborhood Recovery Efforts
led by Atlanta Neighborhood Development Partnership

Piece by Piece Regional Foreclosure Response Initiative (PBP) is a regional collaborative proposed to coordinate strategies for responding to the foreclosure crisis and its aftermath. Led by Atlanta Neighborhood Development Partnership, in collaboration with the Atlanta Regional Commission, Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, Greater Atlanta Homebuilders Association, The Home Depot Foundation, Enterprise Community Partners, National Housing Conference, ClearPoint and NeighborWorks® America, Piece by Piece is now in its fifth year. The initiative is particulary focused on stabilizing metropolitan Atlanta neighborhoods where the majority of homeowners remain underwater on their mortgages.

We honor Piece by Piece with the 2015 Housing Visionary Award for its work to stabilize neighborhoods hit hardest by the foreclosure crisis. With approximately 27 percent of metro Atlanta homeowners underwater on their mortgages, compared to a 17 percent national average, PBP has worked diligently to not only provide quality affordable housing, but also to lift home values and spark market activity in areas that have experienced little to no growth since the foreclosure crisis. Beginning with a six-pilot program where the initiative acquired foreclosed properties, renovated them and sold to new homeowners, PBP has positively impacted nearly 500 previously foreclosed properties. The intiative has inspired other stakeholders to focus their resources on countering the effects of the foreclosure crisis with an ultimate goal to reduce metro Atlanta's underwater rate to pre-recession levels.

NHC is pleased to honor the work of Piece by Piece to help hardest-hit neighborhoods recover and thrive.
