Beltway Burden: The Combined Cost of Housing and Transportation in the Greater Washington, DC, Metropolitan Area

Center for Housing Policy, Center for Neighborhood Technology, Urban Land Institute Terwilliger Center for Workforce Housing

This report finds that the average working household in the Washington, DC metro area spends over $36,000 a year -- or 47 percent of their income -- on the combined costs of housing and transportation.

As a complement to the report, the Terwilliger Center also released the Terwilliger Cost Calculator, which provides consumers with up-to-date Washington, D.C. metro area housing and transportation cost data that they can use to make informed decisions on where to live and work.
